"The Star and Crescent shall not be worn by every man, but only by him who is worthy to wear it. He must be a gentleman... a man of honor and courage...a man of zeal, yet humble...an intelligent man... a man of truth...one who tempers action with wisdom and, above all else, one who walks in the light of God."
Four Pillars of Kappa Sigma
At the Delta-Xi chapter we take the Brothers in Action program very seriously. We believe that an active and involved chapter is a productive chapter and go to great lengths to give our members opportunities to fellowship and build long-lasting friendships that will last a lifetime. The Brothers in Action program is at the heart of every pillar of Kappa Sigma .
Brothers in Action is seen strongest through the pillar of Fellowship, the two are almost one and the same. The fellowship aspect of BIA strengthens the bond cemented between brothers through our beloved Ceremony of Initiation and turns acquaintances into brothers and friends for life.
Brothers in Action also strengthens leadership by providing opportunities for younger members to spend time with older, more experienced members of the fraternity. Leadership ability is strengthened and encouraged through BIA because it opens a door for questions pertaining to leadership opportunities and strategies.
Brothers in Action is seen through the scholarship aspect of Kappa Sigma because time spent with brothers encourages higher grades just as it encourages leadership. As conversations are sparked, friendships are made. Then, younger members can consult with older members with whom they are friends when picking classes, studying for a test, or trying to learn new material.
Lastly, Brothers in Action is linked to the Kappa Sigma pillar of service because the friendships that are made can be relied on when a service project needs to be done and done quickly. A perfect example is one which occurred just a month ago here in our chapter. Brother Grey Reno is president of our Student Rebel Bullpen Club and was called upon by head baseball coach Mike Bianco to help complete construction of a new children’s playground at Swayze Field. Brother Reno was able to email the chapter and within a matter of hours several members had shown up to help complete the construction in a spur of the moment philanthropic activity.
The four pillars of Kappa Sigma are the foundation for the Brothers in Action program. Brotherhood development is essential to a fraternity and establishing a lasting tradition of excellence among a chapter. At Delta-Xi, BIA is taken very seriously and is a passion of every member because it causes the brotherhood of Kappa Sigma to last not for a day, or an hour, or a college term only, but for life. “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another,” Proverbs 27:17.
